DATE OF ** ORIGINAL ** INSERT PHOTO / COVER / PRINT: 1929CITY / TOWN-STATE: DETAILS: ON THE TERRACE AT DEL MONTE PEBBLE BEACH CALIFORNIA THE GOLF COURSE IS THE SCENE OF THE 1929 NATIONAL AMATEUR GOLF TOURNAMENT Pebble Beach Golf Links is a public golf course on the west coast of the United States, located in Pebble Beach, California. Regarded by Travel and Leisure blog as one of the most beautiful courses in the world,[1] it hugs the rugged coastline and has wide open views of Carmel Bay, opening to the Pacific Ocean on the south side of the Monterey Peninsula. In 2001, it became the first public course to be selected as the No. 1 Golf Course in America by Golf Digest. Greens fees are among the highest in the world, at $525 (plus $40 cart fee or $92.50 caddie fee for non-resort guests) per round in 2018. Four of the courses in the coastal community of Pebble Beach, including Pebble Beach Golf Links, belong to the Pebble Beach Company, which also operates three hotels and a spa at the resort. The other courses are The Links at Spanish Bay, Spyglass Hill Golf Course, and Del Monte Golf Course. The PGA Tour and PGA Tour Champions play annual events at Pebble Beach, AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am and the First Tee Open. It has hosted seven men’s major championships: six U.S. Opens and a PGA Championship. It also hosted the 1988 Nabisco Championship, now known as the Tour Championship, the season-ending event on the PGA Tour. World-renowned, the course is included in many golf video games, such as the Links series and the PGA Tour series. History The course began as part of the complex of the Hotel del Monte, a resort hotel in Monterey, California, built by Charles Crocker, one of the California’s Big Four railroad barons, through Southern Pacific Railroad’s property division, Pacific Improvement Company. The hotel first opened on June 10, 1880. The famous 17-Mile Drive was originally designed as a local excursion route for visitors to the Del Monte to take in the historic sights of Monterey and Pacific Grove and the scenery of what would become Pebble Beach. The course was designed by Jack Neville and Douglas Grant and opened on February 22, 1919. Neville also designed the back nine at Pacific Grove Municipal Golf Course on the other side of the Monterey Peninsula. His objective was to place as many of the holes as possible along the rocky and beautiful Monterey coast line. This was accomplished using a “figure 8” layout. The course was extensively revised in 1928 by H. Chandler Egan. Other architects who have worked on the course include Alistair MacKenzie and Robert Hunter (1927) and Jack Nicklaus (creation of the new fifth hole, 1998). On February 27, 1919, Samuel Finley Brown Morse formed the Del Monte Properties Company, and acquired the extensive holdings of the Pacific Improvement Company, which included the Del Monte Forest, the Del Monte Lodge and the Hotel Del Monte. (After World War II, the Hotel del Monte building and surrounding grounds were acquired by the United States Navy to its Naval Postgraduate School and the building was renamed Herrmann Hall.) Golf Course Histories has an aerial comparison of the changes to the course, notably the 17th hole, from 1938 to 2014. The course was bought by a consortium of Japanese investors during the upswing of foreign investments in American properties in the early 1990s. The sale, however, generated controversy when it was discovered that one of the investors had alleged ties to organized crime in Japan. It was then bought by another group of Japanese investors before being sold to the Pebble Beach Co. several years later. Tournaments The first professional tournament at Pebble Beach was the Monterey Peninsula Open in 1926, which had a $5,000 purse. “Lighthorse” Harry Cooper of Texas won with a 72-hole score of 293 (+5] In 1929, Pebble hosted its first major—the U.S. Amateur. A match play event, it was won by Jimmy Johnston of Minnesota, while Bobby Jones tied for medalist honors in the stroke play qualifier, but lost his first-round match to Johnny Goodman. In 1947, Pebble Beach began its run as one of the host courses for the Bing Crosby National Pro-Am tournament, sometimes known as the “Clam Bake”, and now the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. The tournament is held annually, usually in February, and is an unusual four-round tournament. The final round on Sunday is played at Pebble Beach, but the first three rounds of pro-am play are contested in round-robin format at Pebble Beach and two other courses—currently Spyglass Hill Golf Course and Monterey Peninsula Country Club, Shores Course. 1929 U.S. Amateur Jimmy Johnston Match play 4 and 3 Oscar Willing n/a Canada Dry is a brand of soft drinks founded in 1904 and owned since 2008 by the American company Dr Pepper Snapple (now Keurig Dr Pepper).[ For over 100 years, Canada Dry has been known mainly for its ginger ale, though the company also manufactures a number of other soft drinks and mixers. Although Canada Dry originated in Canada, as the brand name suggests, it is now produced in many countries such as the United States, Panama, Mexico, Chile, Costa Rica, Japan, and in a number of countries of Europe and the Middle East. Etymology The “Dry” in the brand’s name refers to not being sweet, as in a dry wine. When John J. McLaughlin, who first formulated “Canada Dry Pale Ginger Ale”, originally made his new soft drink, it was far less sweet than other ginger ales then available; as a result, he labelled it “dry”. History In 1890, Canadian pharmacist and chemist John J. McLaughlin of Enniskillen, Ontario (Hamlet), after working in a soda factory in Brooklyn, New York, opened a carbonated water plant in Toronto. McLaughlin was the eldest son of Robert McLaughlin, founder of McLaughlin Carriage and McLaughlin Motor Car.[ In 1904, McLaughlin created “Canada Dry Pale Ginger Ale”. Three years later, the drink was appointed to the Viceregal Household of the Governor General of Canada and the label featuring a beaver atop a map of Canada was replaced with the present crown and shield label. When McLaughlin began shipping his product to New York, it became so popular that he opened a plant in Manhattan shortly thereafter. After McLaughlin’s death in 1914, the company was run briefly by his brother, Samuel McLaughlin. P. D. Saylor and Associates bought the business from the McLaughlin family in 1923 and formed Canada Dry Ginger Ale, Inc., a public company.[ Canada Dry’s popularity as a mixer began during Prohibition, when its flavor helped mask the taste of homemade liquor. In the 1930s, Canada Dry expanded worldwide. From the 1950s onward, the company introduced a larger number of products. Norton Simon took an interest in the company in 1964, and it merged with Simon’s other holdings, the McCall Corporation and Hunt Foods, to form Norton Simon Inc. Dr Pepper bought Canada Dry from Norton Simon in 1982. In 1984, Dr Pepper was acquired by Forstmann Little & Company, and Canada Dry was sold to R. J. Reynolds’ Del Monte Foods unit to pay off acquisition debt. RJR Nabisco sold its soft drink business to Cadbury Schweppes in 1986. Today, Canada Dry is owned by Keurig Dr Pepper, which was spun off from Cadbury Schweppes in 2008. ARTIST: PROBABLY GEORGE O’NEIL FLAPPER FASHION EQUESTRIAN HORSE COUNTRY CLUB CAFE RESORT ` George Bernard O’Neill (17 July 1828 – 23 September 1917), was a prolific Irish genre painter, from 1859 a member of the Cranbrook Colony of artists. Life and work O’Neill was born in Dublin in Ireland, the ninth of fifteen children of a Dublin Ordnance clerk. He arrived in England in 1837, went to school in Woolwich and was accepted at the Royal Academy Schools in 1845. He was a successful student, regularly exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1847 onwards, and gained a reputation as a painter of charming narrative scenes. ‘The Foundling’, exhibited in 1852, demonstrated his awareness of works by Old Masters combined with the appealing subject of an orphaned child. In 1855 O’Neill married Emma Stuart Callcott, a cousin of John Callcott Horsley. Through this marriage he entered Horsley’s artistic circle and by 1859 was introduced to the Cranbrook Colony. Next year George and Emma leased a medieval timber-framed, ‘Old Wilsley House’, about one mile away from the town of Cranbrook and maintained it as a summer home and studio for many years. It became a setting for many of O’Neill’s paintings. O’ Neill’s artistic manner was similar to that of Thomas Webster and Frederick Daniel Hardy. The close relationship between O’Neill and Hardy can be judged from their little painting ‘The Surprise’ where Hardy painted the interior and O’Neill – the figure (Wolverhampton Art Gallery). Scenes of rural life – virtuous, innocent, sometimes slightly comical, sometimes sentimental, painted on small domestic scale, appealed to middle-class customers. The height of his success was in the 1850s-1870s, when his works were eagerly collected by Midlands industrialists and the entrepreneurs of other industrial regions of the country. This feeling of public success was expressed in O’Neill’s painting ‘Public Opinion’, which had been shown at the Royal Academy in 1863 (at present at the Leeds City Art Gallery). O’Neill also kept a home and studio in London, where he spent the winter months participating in the capital’s artistic life. In the 1870s, along with George Henry Boughton, he became friends with James McNeill Whistler and offered him moral support during the years 1877–78, when Whistler sued the critic John Ruskin for libel. Although O’Neill’s artistic views were in many ways contrary to these of Whistler, they both believed that the artist’s aesthetic purpose gave validity to a work of art. Most of O’Neill’s paintings associated with the Cranbrook Colony look like sentimental depictions of children and rustic families, but they might have een intended for more serious purpose. It was noticed that “children can be used to publicize the iniquities of the social system without seeming to attack the social structure; reform might well be achieved by appeals to the conscience through sentiment rather than by reasoned argument and criticism of an overly political character.” If so, O’Neill’s images of children can be seen in the context of Dickens’ novels as a part of the social movements of that time. The following decades saw a significant decline in the quality of his works and in their popularity. He died in London on 23 September 1917, just two months into his 89th year, having not exhibited for the last 24 years of his life.
