SHF/GMF (Ground Mobile Forces) TERMINALS: The AN/TSC-93B and AN/TSC-85B are part of a family of small SHF ground communications terminals designed for tactical and strategic satellite communications utilizing the Defense Satellite Communications Systems II and III (DSCS II & DSCS III) satellites. The AN/TSC-93B and AN/TSC-85B tactical terminals are highly mobile, quick-reaction terminals capable of providing multi-point (nodal) and point-to-point (non-nodal) full-duplex multi-channel communications. Working through the DSCS satellites, either short or long range communications can be established under diverse environmental conditions. The terminals can be organized into networks to support any combination of organizational levels. The Marine Corps is in a transition from AN/TSC-93B(V)1 and AN/TSC-85(v)1 terminals to version (V)2 terminals. The primary difference being an Anti-Jam (AJ) capability in version 2 models. GMF terminals have compatibility but there are differences between the services GMF equipment. For example, both the USMC and the Army have AN/TSC-93Bs, but the USMC AN/TSC-93B has three LRMs where the Army AN/TSC-93B only has two. 2. USMC AN/TSC-93B AND AN/TSC-85B GMF TERMINALS: Although the AN/TSC-85B has increased capabilities over the AN/TSC-93B, it is more a factor of redundant equipment then different equipment. The similarities between the AN/TSC-93B and the AN/TSC-85B are extensive and will facilitate covering them both at the same time, noting differences as they apply. A. AN/TSC-93B: The AN/TSC-93, as shown in figure 4-17A is a NON-NODAL terminal capable of only supporting one point-to-point link. This link may be with another Nonnodal terminal, or it may be a link to a NODAL terminal such as the AN/TSC-85B. The AN/TSC-93 is housed in a S-250 shelter and is transported by a M-1028 HMMWV which tows a 10KW (MEP-3) power unit. A second vehicle carries the 8ft antenna and tows a second MEP-3. If a 20ft parabolic antenna is to be used with an AN/TSC-93, an M-923 (5 TON) is required to transport it. B. AN/TSC-85B: The AN/TSC-85B is a nodal terminal capable of supporting communication links with up to four other terminals. The AN/TSC-85B terminal is housed in an S-280 shelter and is transported by a five ton truck (M923) and tows a 30KW (MEP-5) power unit. The AN/TSC-85B normally uses a 20 ft parabolic antenna (OE-361) which is transported on a second M923, which tows a second MEP-5 generator. C. EQUIPMENT GROUPS: The equipment of the AN/TSC-93B and AN/TSC-85B can be broken down into several basic functional equipment groups. The Power group, Auxiliary Equipment group, Antenna Group, Transmitter Group, Receiver Group, Modem Group, and the Base band group. & STUDENT HANDOUT UHF SATELLITE COMMUNICATIONS LEARNING OBJECTIVES: 1. TERMINAL LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Provided a mission, concept of operations and references, and commander’s guidance, design a satellite radio system which will support the concept of operations per the commander’s guidance and references. Space is the Marine Corp’s “high ground.” Historically, whoever held and used the high ground had a significant advantage over his adversaries. The use of space offers the USMC enhanced capabilities on the battlefield and provides communications, position/navigation data, early warning, weather, environmental monitoring, surveillance, and targeting capabilities. Marines today are using space products, sometimes without even being aware of it. The effective use of space systems and products is critical to successful Marine Corp global operations. There is nothing mystical about satellites. Aside from its associated high-tech design, scientific documentation, and costly launch vehicle, a communications satellite is basically just a microwave radio relay station placed on very high “hill”. Communications satellites provide a tremendous range extension advantage for the Marine Corps. Satellite terminal users within a very large area of the earth covered by a satellite’s antenna can communicate with each other directly. A single satellite can link together sites that are far beyond the range of a single terrestrial line-of-sight radio link. Satellites allow the global relaying of important information in a variety of ways, either to a single user or broadcast to many users simultaneously. Accurate weather data is often obtainable only from satellite systems. Placing a long distance telephone call often involves a satellite transmission. Maps are routinely updated using data acquired by satellites. The Marine Corp uses satellite communications primarily for voice and data, but the use of SATCOM is rapidly developing in other application areas to satisfy broadly ranging needs. Imagery, video teleconferencing, and global broadcast are examples of those needs. Terrestrial communications systems, even those involving fiber optic cables, cannot duplicate certain functions for which satellites are ideally suited. Mobility and flexibility on the battlefield, and broadcast capability to deployed units in a theater are unique satellite capabilities which cannot be equaled by fiber optic cable. The integration of satellite and terrestrial networks permits maximum communications flexibility for the warfighter.
