The oil is extracted through steam distillation and the more lemony the aroma, the more likely it is to repel insects. Common Uses: Citronella essential oil is traditionally used as an insect repellant for mosquitos, fleas, and sand flies. It can be vaporized, or sprayed onto the bedding of pets. Some pet shampoos contain Citronella essential oil.
