A stunning pair of large and gorgeous 2nd half XIX c Westerwald German Salt Glazed Cobalt Blue Pottery wine decanters / pitchers / ewers. The best and most exquisite examples of the Historismus decoration style, typical for Westerwald decorative ceramics of the time. Feature round shaped tubular bodies with wild boar heads spouts holding loose ornamented rings inserted into their noses. Ornate handles come decorated with the mermaids holding the spouts in their hands as if pouring the contents. The round body stands on a flaring base and a round pedestal, decorated with abundant reliefs of stylised flowers, quatrefoils, foliage, ornaments, lions muzzles, nobility portraits in historic attire and coats of arms. Decoration of the ewers’ sides is reminiscent of the Wheel of Fortune. The outer rims and the inner sides of the circles are stamped with repeating quatrefoils. The base colour is grey. The ewers are elaborately decorated in exceptionally deep cobalt blue that enhances the embossed elements and make the details stand out. Produced in Westerwald, Germany, at the famous Reinhold Hanke factory and featured in the 1884-1885 catalogue. Reinhold Hanke factory was founded in 1868. Hanke, a prominent ceramist and businessman, played a key role in the renaissance of XV-XVI cc. traditions of Westerwald salt glazed stoneware. In 1875 he was was appointed the title of the Official Purveyor to the Royal Court of Prussia. The factory was closed in 1938. Backstamped to the bottom with the embossed 109 number. Hand signed in green ink by the master. Ewers comes in very good original condition. One of the rings shows cracks underglaze which could be firing cracks or results restoration.
