eBay Barbie 1961 original 850 #5 Titanium Red Head. Dressed in #959/1612 Theater Date outfit and original Zebra stripe one piece swim suite. I. History: a. Barbie original 850 #5 manufactured in 1961: The number 850 #5 Ponytail Barbie was manufactured in 1961 with the new hollow body. Her bangs felt more coarse than the initial issue in 1959,and again in 1960. It was the first year Mattel introduced new hair colors besides blonde, brunette, or titian hair colors. Also the T.M. symbol was replaced with the ® symbol after the word “Barbie” on her right Butt cheek mark. Many of the #5 dolls had a greasy face problem. (There was a breakdown in the vinyl they used to make the dolls, which soon Mattel corrected. This doll appears to be the corrected version) She’s the first Barbie to come in the package wearing a wrist tag (earliest tags were red and then changed to gold foil). She is marked: Barbie® Pats. Pend. © MCMLVIII by Mattel Inc. In the box she wears her black and white striped one-piece swimsuit, black open toe heels, pearl earrings, white sunglasses with blue lens, and has a black all wire stand, and booklet. b. Theater Date outfit #959 & #1612: This ensemble was made to be displayed on a red-haired Barbie Doll. The first edition of the outfit was introduced in 1962 and numbered #959. The outfit consisted of the following: Emerald Green Satin Bolero Jacket, Emerald Green Satin Peplum Skirt, White Satin Shell, Green Open Toe Heels, and Emerald Green Pillbox Hat. The following year 1963 the same outfit was released without the Emerald Green Pillbox Hat and renumbered outfit #1612. Weather the outfit looks better on the American Girl Red Head, #5 Auburn or #5 Titanium Red Ponytail (or any other Doll) is strictly a mater of choice and opinion. II. For sale: Barbie 1961 original Number 850 #5 with Titanium Red hair and Ponytail. Dressed in original #959/1612 theater date ensemble. Comes with original Zebra Striped Black and white one piece Bathing suite. a. Model Overview: Butt Marks are worn but readable under a magnifying glass. The word Japan is clearly visible on right foot. Very nice tan facial features are clear but hard to photograph. Earing holes are tiny Doll is in very good condition given it is over 60 years old. b. Model Features: Original Black and White Zebra one piece Bathing suite, standard to the doll. Original #959 Theater Date outfit with #1612 hat. Full ensemble included: Emerald Green Satin Bolero Jacket Emerald Green Satin Peplum Skirt White Satin Shell Green Open Toe Heels Emerald Green Pillbox Hat (1963 only, the 1964 version did not include the hat.) Both the outfit and one piece swimsuit are in excellent condition. Shoes are lose on the feet. Rubber cement should hold them in place, and can easily wiped of with rubbing alcohol (DO NOT USE LAQUER THINNER, ACETONE, or NAIL POLISH REMOVER. c. Model Finish: Hair is in excellent condition. All original makeup. Coral pink lipstick and smoky blue eye shadow. All original nail paint is visible toe nail paint has worn off. Two tiny earring hole per ear. Iris is dark blue pupils appear to be black. Eybrows are faded due to time they are the curved style not the inverted V (^ ^) style brows. d. Opinion: I really like the light tan, and if the doll had the greasy look as mentioned above it would have shown years ago. The Theater date outfit puts the whole doll together, I prefer her without the hat. The one piece swimsuit is included for collectors that like all original. The earrings black stand sun glasses. Although wieldy available on eBay. The price point falls in line with the Butt marking putting the doll at a lower price point. If you are looking for a mint #5 this doll wont turn the trick, but if you want one in excellent condition with, and excellent hair, with a lot of potential for hobbyist this doll will work. I am not a photographer and not happy with the photos in my opinion the doll looks much nicer than the photos. More images were taken and available on request, not posted due to 12 photo limit. III. Box: Doll comes in an unfinished wooden box with with brass hinges, and latches. IV. Shipping: Free local pick up Seattle WA area. Domestic: Free USPS Priority Mail.
